According to an info card stuck to the back of the frame, this shimmering piece is a Christian Lassen original.  I did a little bit of research on Mr. Lassen and he appears to be a sort of Scandinavian Fabio (see 1, 2) who spends his time surfing in Hawaii and painting fantasy art featuring dolphins, unicorns, white tigers, the cosmos, etc.  According to the bio on his website, Christian is the “premier marine artist of our time.”  (Also from the bio, “work is his ultimate seduction”).   So if you’re as lucky as me to find one of his masterpieces for $2, I would definitely recommend jumping on that shit ASAP. 

I acquired this piece recently at my local Goodwill.  I’m not sure if this was originally intended to appeal to children or what, but I hope to God that no parents ever hung this up in their child’s bedroom.  That dog’s face is the kind of image that will sear itself into a young, impressionable mind, causing horrible nightmares for years to come.
